Elk Hunting For Beginners May 17th, 2011
The elk in North America is one of the largest kinds of deer that can be found anywhere on the globe. In fact, the only bigger one is a moose, which is also referred to as an elk in Europe. Elk are herbivores and typically live in forests and eat grass and other plants, and sometimes bark off trees. A male elk is easy to see, based on their huge antlers that they can use for both protection against predators and for competition against other males.
Elk meat is highly sought because it is high in protein compared to more traditional forms of meat like pork or chicken. If you go elk hunting, you want to try and avoid being seen or smelt by the animal. Any clothing you wear should match the surroundings and there should be nothing that jumps out or looks unnatural. You want to pay attention to the wind, and make sure your scent is not being blown to these animals, which have very sensitive noses.
There are scents you can buy made to mask your smell, and also that elk like, so they may wander towards you. Elk also hear very well, so you want to be as quiet as you can. Watch your step, and avoid making any sudden loud noises if possible. There are a lot of resources available to help you with elk hunting. Consider contacting the U.S. Forest Service for more information about where elk can be found, and hunting laws. Elk can be found in many spots in North America, and their meat is highly prized, along with their warm fur.
When you do go elk hunting, try and be very quiet and avoid detection from your highly alert prey at all costs. Hunting elk is challenging, but also great fun, and very rewarding if you are successful.
